There is something truly magical about a winter wedding. Maybe it’s the chance of snow on your big day or the crisp winter greenery and blooms that deck the halls of your venue. Perhaps it’s the elegance of winter textures like faux fur and velvet. Or, the decadent desserts and cozy cocktails. Whatever the reason, celebration is embedded in the spirit of the season, and you’ll want guests to feel that cheer from the moment they say yes to your winter wedding invite.

In addition to the invite itself, response cards are also an important part of the wedding paper suite.Katie Brownstein, a wedding expert at Joy, recommends giving response cards some flair by asking winter-themed questions, or more general queries like, "what song will get them out on the dance floor?" It's a great way to add some personal touches and include guests in your big day.

What to look for in winter wedding invitations

Design

The design of your wedding invite is, of course, at the top of the list of considerations. You'll want to make sure that the invite fits your wedding theme and, in some cases, dress code (this is especially true for black tie events). Additionally, you want to make sure that the design allows for adequate room for the invite details, such as the location, your wedding website, and, of course, your names.

Response Cards

Another important thing to look out for is whether or not the invite comes with a response card (or if you can purchase one separately with the same design). “Whether including response cards for guests to mail in their RSVPs or requesting that guests RSVP on your wedding website, keep all RSVP details on a separate card,” says Brownstein.

Price

When looking for a winter wedding invitation, calculating the cost per card is a helpful way to stay within your budget.

FAQ
  • What should wedding invitations include?

According to Brownstein, you should “only include the most important details on a wedding invitation.” This includes the “couple’s names, the names of anyone helping host the wedding, the actual request to the wedding, the wedding date and time, the location of the ceremony and reception (if different), and, in some cases, the dress code,” Brownstein adds. “The last thing you want to do is clutter your beautiful invitation with too much information.”

In addition to these details, Brownstein recommends including a link to your wedding website “on the back of the invitation or on an insert card” to advise guests where they can find additional information for your wedding day.

  • How many weeks in advance should you send out wedding invitations?

“Wedding invitations are typically sent two months ahead of the wedding date, or six months in advance of the wedding date for a destination wedding to allow guests to make travel plans,” says Brownstein.

That being said, the pandemic has changed the timeline for sending out wedding invites. “We are starting to see couples send invitations further ahead of their wedding to ensure their date is reserved on guests’ calendars," Brownstein explains.

  • When should you send out save-the-date cards?

Save-the-dates are like a wedding invite appetizer and an important part of your paper budget. When sending save-the-date cards out, Brownstein says to mail them “six months ahead of the wedding date, or eight months to one year ahead for destination weddings.”

  • How many days do you give guests to RSVP to a wedding?

“Set an RSVP deadline at least two weeks ahead of the wedding, so you can finalize details such as seating charts and pass along information like headcount and meal selections to your vendors,” advises Brownstein.
